Twenty-one students were hospitalized after suffering heat-related illness while evacuating during a potential bomb threat.
On Friday, Sept. 4, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) was notified of a potential bomb threat at Carter Middle School in Tennessee after “a threatening message was discovered written on a bathroom wall” just before 10 a.m. local time, authorities shared in a news release.
Following the discovery, the building was cleared, and school administrators relocated students to the school’s football field around 10:25 a.m. During that time, the sheriff’s office said that Sergeant Wallace and Deputy Bowers “conducted a thorough sweep of the school for any potential threats.”

While students were only outside for under an hour, having been permitted to re-enter the school around 11:27 a.m., multiple students exhibited signs of heat-related illness. EMS units immediately responded to the scene and provided care to the students in need.
According to Rural Metro Fire, 21 students were taken to Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital after they suffered from heat exhaustion. Three of those students were in critical condition at the time they were transported.

“Students were outside per the school’s protocols while KCSO cleared the building and ensured the safety and integrity of the premises,” a spokesperson shared on Facebook. “Some students were treated in the field house next to the field, and the majority were treated once back inside the building.”

Following the incident, Rural Metro’s Jeff Bagwell told local outlet WVLT that “the school reacted as they should.”

“The system has worked flawlessly, so the public should know the system works,” he said of the evacuation procedures. “The students are safe, and at no time were they in any harm or jeopardy.”
Knox County Schools Superintendent Jon Rysewyk previously told the outlet that students were provided with water and shade while waiting outside.
“I think the Carter Middle staff did well in that case,” Bagwell continued. “In any of those situations where we have an outdoor evacuation, we ask staff to think about [monitoring weather] on the front side.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the threat.
“The Knox County Sheriff’s Office takes every threat involving the safety of our schools seriously,” a KCSO spokesperson wrote in a social media statement. “We appreciate the cooperation of Carter Middle School administrators, staff, students and our emergency response partners throughout this incident.”
