Alix and Ashtin Earle learned the results of their testing for the BRCA2 gene change, a mutation that may increase their risk for certain cancers

Their mom, Alisa Earle, was diagnosed with breast cancer and revealed as a BRCA2 gene carrier last year

The sisters shared their emotional reactions to the results on episode 7 of Earle Meets World and emphasized the importance of knowing their genetic health risks on the show

Alix and Ashtin Earle faced a shocking health revelation in episode 7 of their new Netflix series, Earle Meets World.

The sisters’ mom, Alisa Earle, was diagnosed with breast cancer about halfway through Alix’s time competing on season 34 ofĀ Dancing with the StarsĀ last year, the social media star revealed in January. Her journey with the disease was chronicled in part on the new series, which premiered on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 4.As a result of Alisas’s diagnosis, the Earle sisters decided to undergo testing to see if they were carriers of the BRCA2 gene mutation like their mother. The mutation can make carriers more likely to develop certain cancers, like breast and ovarian, according to the National Cancer Institute.

After completing testing in a prior episode, Alix and Ashtin waited for the results with their mom by their side at her home in New Jersey. Sitting on the couch, the pair admitted they were nervous to learn what the tests hold in store.

ā€œOf course we want to hope for the best, but you can’t help but fear for the worst,ā€ Alix admitted in a confessional.ā€œI’m a little anxious. I just got a wave of anxiety,ā€ Ashtin, 23, said, before a genetic counselor arrived at the home to read the results. Added Alix, ā€œI kind of feel like I’m going to throw up.ā€After Pankti Doshi, a genetic counselor, arrived, she handed the two sisters folders containing their health information. ā€œWhen it comes to genetic testing and revealing the results, my whole thing is to rip the Band-Aid and get the results out,ā€ she said.

ā€œLet’s just do it,ā€ answered Alix, 25.Doshi then revealed that the two sisters tested positive for the BRCA2 genetic mutation. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are both genes that produce proteins that work to repair damaged DNA, according to the National Cancer Institute. Some individuals may inherit a genetic mutation in one of the genes that could lead to an increased risk of several types of cancer.Immediately, Alisa apologized to her daughters before she embraced them in a hug. Crying, Alix hid her face in her hands, saying, ā€œI’m fine. I’ve just been having a bad week anyway.ā€

ā€œAt least we’re in it together,ā€ she added, as she wrapped her arm around her younger sister. ā€œAnd at least we know. And that’s such a privilege to be able to know.ā€ā€œGoing into it, I was like, you just have to know that this is a very real option. I feel like I prepared myself for that. I don’t know why, but when she actually said it, I just lost it. It was just really weird to hear for the first time,ā€ added Alix in a confessional.Ashtin also added that she never considered that both of the sisters might be carriers of the gene. ā€œIn my mind it was always like one of us might have it or neither of us might have it. I never thought that both of us might have it,ā€ she said.Alix also candidly admitted that part of the reason she felt so upset about the test results was that she wished she could tell her ex-boyfriend, NFL player Braxton Berrios, about them. The sisters then told their dad about the results, who assured them that it’s better for the pair to know and to be prepared with the information going forward. All episodes of Earle Meets World are available to stream on Netflix.
