Bill Maher Makes Bold Declaration About Liberal ‘Monoculture’ in Universities

Bill Maher made a bold declaration about liberal “monoculture” in universities.
During the Friday, August 28 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the late-night host, 70, welcomed Wesleyan University President Michael Roth to the show as a guest.
“I’ve been talking for the last 10 years about the need to diversify the faculty at colleges and universities,” Roth, the author of The Student: A Short History, told Maher. “We have too much of a political monoculture, and we have to work really hard to bring other ideas into the campus.
Roth continued, “I do think most teachers are not trying to indoctrinate their students. They’re trying to get them to think for themselves. But we have a lot of work to do in that regard to make it a more open environment.”
The university president said that at Wesleyan, they have “tried very hard to bring lots more conservative voices on our campus,” including bringing lecturers who are editors of Christianity Today and members of Republican administrations.
Additionally, Maher pointed out, “The statistics, when they’ve done surveys on this — and again, I’m not pushing for the Republicans — I’m just saying when one place, no matter what it is — we know of this here in the state of California — when one party, when one point of view controls everything, they are not checked. And that’s what’s happened on campus.”

The stand-up comedian then shared that “something like 77 out of every 80 professors vote Democratic,” declaring, “That’s a ridiculous number. How did we get there?”
To that, Roth quipped, “Well, I think one of the reasons, you have to understand, you’re in graduate school for eight to 10 years, and you’re taking a job with a starting salary of $70,000. Who but a Democrat would accept that proposition?”
Although Real Time was on a break on September 4 ahead of Labor Day weekend, the HBO show will return on Friday, September 11.
