Bluey voice stars Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack revealed they didn’t meet in person for three and a half years after starting their roles as Bluey’s mom and dad, Chilli and Bandit
They also admitted they have still never recorded together
Zanetti and McCormack teased the upcoming Bluey movie, saying it will introduce new characters and animation as well as take Chilli on more of an emotional “rollercoaster”
Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, the actors who voice Bluey’s parents on the hit animated show Bluey, revealed that they didn’t meet in real life for over three years.
Zanetti, 41, and McCormack, 57, who play mom Chilli and dad Bandit on the show recently caught up with PEOPLE at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, Calif., where they dished on the show’s massive international success and their recent trip to Disneyland.
During the conversation, the Australian stars shared that — while they voice a beloved on-screen husband and wife — they actually didn’t meet in person for some time.
“It was three and a half years,” Zanetti exclusively told PEOPLE.
“It was a couple of years before we even spoke,” McCormack added.

“Which is weird, right?” he continued. “Because they make it on the show so seamless that they’re just hanging out.”
McCormack, who is also a country music singer in his native Australia, went on to reveal that the pair have also “never recorded together.”
“I did mine in my spot and [you did] yours in your spot,” he said, referring to Zanetti, “and then they cut it together.”
The animated series — which follows the daily happenings of grade schooler Bluey, along with her mom, dad and little sister, Bingo, in their Brisbane neighborhood — first premiered in Australia in October 2018.
The show, known for its relatable family dynamics and emotionally resonant storylines, has since won dozens of awards, including a Peabody Award and an International Emmy Award.
As to why Zanetti and McCormack think the show speaks to such a wide audience?

“Great writing,” Zanetti said.
“Great writing, yeah,” agreed McCormack. “The stories are good.”
McCormack went on to say that he often draws from real-life experiences when voicing the role of Bluey and Bingo’s dad.
“When the show started, my daughters were about the same age as Bluey and Bingo, so it was pretty relatable. It’s sort of universal. And the show itself can make just little things that everyone can relate to,” he explained.

Zanetti added: “I was also filming something in Italy and the first AD came and said, ‘Oh. my gosh, Bluey. It’s my whole life. It’s exactly like my family.’ And this is someone in a different country who speaks a different language. And it resonates that feeling.”
The pair also teased some details from The Bluey Movie, which is set to hit theaters in August 2027.
“Bringing in some new characters,” McCormack explained.

“These new characters and some new animation, which is going to be very exciting,” Zanetti said, adding that her character will experience “more of [an emotional] rollercoaster” in the film.
“[It will be] very exciting for everyone to see why that happens to me,” she said.
