Catherine Zeta-Jones called Bonnie Tyler a “one-of-a-kind artist” and shared a heartfelt tribute honoring their close bond and memories together

Catherine Zeta-Jones is mourning the loss of her friend Bonnie Tyler, with whom she had a surprising family connection.

The Chicago actress paid tribute to Tyler with an Instagram post on Thursday, July 9, shortly after the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer — whose husband Robert Sullivan is Zeta-Jones’s cousin — died at age 75.

“My heart is broken with the news that our dearest Bonnie Tyler has passed away,” she wrote. “[She] has been such a part of my life.”

Zeta-Jones, 56, included a photo of the pair in her post, and explained that the picture was taken the night before her 2000 wedding to Michael Douglas.

“She sang and rocked it at my wedding. An extraordinary woman with vocals to match,” the Oscar winner wrote. “A one-of-a-kind artist, who so easily could have been a comedian because she was one of the funniest people I ever met. Thank you Bonnie for the joy you brought so many.”

She continued: “Sleep tight beautiful lady. We shall forever ‘Keep a Welcome in the Hillsides’ of Wales for you. Sending my love to Robert and the family. God Bless💔🙏🏻”

Tyler and Sullivan, a businessman and former Olympian, were married from 1973 to her death on July 8.

The star previously opened up about singing at Zeta-Jones’s wedding to the BBC in 2001, revealing that she wound up performing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” around midnight.

“I like to have a drink, you know, but not before I sing. So I drank one glass of vintage champagne from 7:30 until after I came off stage at 12-ish,” she said. “And it was all underneath my nose and all this incredible vintage red wine and vintage champagne everywhere. And I couldn’t drink any of it, you know, until I came on stage. I made up for it then though!”

Tyler’s death was announced on July 9, about two months after she was placed into an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read. “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

In mid-June, her family and her team said the star was “no longer in a coma,” but was still “very unwell and in intensive care.”

“Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the statement read.

“[We] want to tell you that she is aware of, and very grateful for, your good wishes,” it continued. “Bonnie’s family continue to ask for privacy and promise that we will issue further updates as soon as there are significant developments to share.”
