Goonies actress Martha Plimpton shared her heartbreaking verdict on the long-rumored sequel to the beloved '80s blockbuster.
Plimpton, 55, who played Stef Steinbrenner in The Goonies, recently revealed her thoughts on the status of a potential sequel, and it's not looking good for Goonies fans, according to the Hollywood actress.
While it was announced in 2025 that a second film was in the works, Plimpton didn't seem optimistic about the comeback in a new interview.

In an interview with Page Six, Plimpton said that The Goonies 2 is "never gonna happen."

"I hear something, and then nothing. And then every single person wants to know, and I hear the same answer. It's nothing," she explained to the outlet.
Plimpton, who is currently in Season 2 of FX's The Lowdown, was only 14 when she starred in the 1985 cult classic alongside other cast members, including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Ke Huy Quan.
While Plimpton may be certain that a Goonies sequel will never come to fruition, in 2025, Variety reported that Warner Bros. hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for The Goonies 2.
The outlet reported at the time that Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario would produce, and that Chris Columbus, who wrote the original Goonies script based on a story by Spielberg, was also brought on. Lauren Shuler Donner was announced as an executive producer of the film.

At the time, no director was announced, and no plot details were revealed, leaving many to wonder when they might expect a Goonies sequel.
Ponciroli gave an update on the script at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, per Deadline, saying he had turned in a first draft that was "very well received." He added that he was working on a second draft and that things were "moving in the right direction."
The original movie, which follows an adventurous group of kids who find a map to hidden treasure, became a fixture of many '80s kids' childhoods. It has been a long time coming for a sequel, over 40 years after the original came out.
For some original Goonies cast members, the famous line "Goonies never say die" applies to the sequel.
Quan spoke about the rumored sequel when he appeared alongside his co-star Feldman at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California, in 2025.
"It's one of the most asked questions in my life," Quan said, as reported by Variety. "I would love for it to happen."
Feldman showed his optimism for a sequel, saying, "All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean's looking good. Josh is looking good. We're all looking good still, and we're all alive. Goonies never say die...There's hope."
It appears only time will tell when a Goonies sequel will be released, but it appears that many original Goonies actors and executives are hopeful for a reunion.
