Blumhouse released the trailer to its upcoming thriller, Soulm8te, which had a brutal response from horror fans.
On July 8, Blumhouse shared the Soulm8te trailer online, which confirmed that the film is set in the same AI-driven M3GAN universe. In the 2022 horror thriller, Gemma (Allison Williams) created a lifelike doll, Megan, to become her niece's greatest companion. However, Megan turned into a psycho killer and slaughtered innocent lives who got in her way.
This time around, Soulm8te follows a grieving engineer (David Rysdahl) who builds a sentient soulmate (Lily Sullivan) who becomes obsessed with him and starts causing mayhem. This came after Blumhouse recently announced the release date for the upcoming Blair Witch remake.

Viewers took to social media to slam the Soulm8te trailer, arguing that the bland plot felt similar to recent thrillers such as Obsession and Companion.
One person said, "I know this is likely being fast dumped because of Obsession’s crazy success. I think if this came out before Obsession, it probably would have killed it. However, in the wake of Obsession, this seems like the same movie, only more sci-fi oriented."

Another person added, "So it's literally just a Companion ripoff. Hard pass for me."
A third wrote, "Crazy how I have no interest in this bland storyline. Feel like I’ve seen the whole movie already."

Despite the criticism, Soulm8te had a supporter who shared, "This looks absolutely wild. As a huge sci-fi horror fan, I can't wait to check this out in August!"
You Are Not My Mother filmmaker Kate Dolan directed Soulm8te, from a story by Megan creator James Wan.

“Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness,” said Dolan in a statement announcing the new project back in June 2024.
“Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths," her statement closed.
Wan added, "We’re excited to partner with Kate to bring this story to life with her unique cinematic vision and point of view.”
M3GAN, the original sci-fi/horror slasher, was a major success when it hit theaters in 2023. The film grossed more than $181 million worldwide at the box office, according to Variety.

Unfortunately, the sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was unable to gross as much as the first one.
The sequel brought in about $10 million domestically in its opening last June and ended its theatrical run with just $39 million worldwide.
As a straight-to-digital release, Soulm8te will be available to rent on digital platforms starting August 1.
