Jessica Lange said she’s “coming to an end” of her acting career in a new interview

Calling her decades on stage and screen “a great adventure,” Lange said, “I’m so grateful that [it] came my way”

Her most recent film, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, was “not a bad way to end,” she said

Jessica Lange is contemplating the end of her acting career.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone published on Friday, Oct. 30, Lange, 77, hinted at retirement, saying, “I actually feel like I’m coming to an end.” She referred to her most recent movie, a new adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, as “not a bad way to end.”

The American Horror Story star said that “there are a couple projects that have been in the works forever that may or may not happen. I don’t know. It doesn’t seem easy to get things made anymore. At least not the kind of films that interest me.”

Lange, a two-time Oscar winner, three-time Emmy winner and Tony winner for the 2016 Broadway revival of the O’Neill play, reflected on her decades of appearing on stage and screen since a Golden Globe-winning film debut in 1976’s King Kong.

“When I think of the directors I worked with: [Bob] Fosse, Bob Rafelson, Costa-Gavras, Tony Richardson, Karel Reisz. I [had] extraordinary opportunities working with great artists,” she said.

“And the actors I was working with! Dustin [Hoffman] and Kim [Stanley] and Jack [Nicholson]. We got to throw [Martin] Scorsese in there, too. It was an extraordinary run.”

Lange also opened up about the ways that moviemaking has changed throughout her career — and not always in a positive way.

“What I assumed was it was always going to be that exciting and thrilling, and the work was always going to be on that caliber,” she said. “But then, the business changes.”

Directors used to work “right next to the camera,” she said, creating “a wonderful exchange of energy, this belief in each other, and this [willingness] to do better.”

“Then, of course, video playback came in, and now it’s so, so removed,” Lange continued. “Oftentimes, you don’t even see the director on the set, which I think is very detrimental.”

When asked how she’d want people to think about her legacy in Hollywood, the mother of three said that she wants to be remembered as an “honest actor.”

“I’ve been incredibly lucky. I love acting, and I’ve had decades of being able to do it, which has been a joy for me,” she said. “Difficult at times, balancing family and career and locations and dragging my kids here and there. But it all was a great adventure. I’m so grateful that [it] came my way.”

Lange reunited with Ryan Murphy on FX’s anthology horror series American Horror Story for its recent 13th season. She reprised several roles from past seasons alongside other returning cast members including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night, in which Lange starred with Ed Harris, Ben Foster and Colin Morgan, hit theaters on Sept. 25.
