Lily Allen was going through a difficult time while shooting her latest movie, but was âincredibly alive as a performerâ through the experience, her costar Haley Bennett tells PEOPLE.
The two women star in Virginia Woolfâs Night & Day as Katharine (Bennett, 38), an aspiring astronomer, and Mary (Allen, 41), a suffrage activist. The movie first premiered abroad before landing in U.S. theaters on Sept. 4.
âShe was going through a really hard time when she was making the film,â Bennett says of their filming experience. âAnd I think sheâs turned her pain into gold. I feel incredibly privileged to have shared the screen with her.â

In January 2025, Allen separated from her then-husband of four years, David Harbour.
A month earlier, in December 2024, Allen opened up during an episode of her BBC podcast Miss Me?about how her struggles with mental health amid a âtough time over the last monthsâ were impacting her eating habits, which she called a âreal issue.â
Allen went on to release the highest-charting album of her career in over a decade, West End Girl, in October 2025.
In a press release for the album, Allen described it as âa mixture of fact and fiction,â before sharing in a British Vogue interview at the time that it was inspired in part by the breakdown of her marriage. âThere are things that are on the record that I experienced within my marriage, but thatâs not to say that itâs all gospel,â she said. âIt is inspired by what went on in the relationship.â
Allenâs openness about her own struggles came through in her character, Bennett says. She describes Mary as someone who âopens Katharineâs eyes to another way of being a woman,â which she says Allen has been a âperfect exampleâ of in real life.

âLily has done that for so many women herself. Sheâs always been incredibly brave about speaking her truth,â she says. âI love that Lily and Mary donât have any shame when it comes to shadow sides or uncomfortable bits. Thereâs enormous courage in that. And thereâs something very also Woolfian about that. Lily is a reverent, observant, funny, completely herself.â

Bennett shared how âaliveâ Allen was as a performer, noting how that trait allowed her to have a âtenderâ and âvulnerableâ relationship with the British singer.
âI think itâs important that women bolster other women,â she says. âAnd she was doing that for me in the film. And I just think that itâs important. We have to see each other and say that thereâs more for you and keep going. â
Similarly, in the movie, Mary bolsters Katharine and encourages her to keep pursuing her ambitions, despite the trepidations of her family and society in 1910 London.
That example of female friendship played out behind the scenes as well, Bennett says.
âSometimes another woman can see parts of you that you donât see yourself or that youâve lost sight of,â she says. âAnd there are things that women understand about one another without having to explain them, whether that be ambition or exhaustion or compromises, shadow sides; thereâs a special shorthand.â
