This was the definition of a hard-earned point. Newcastle United came back from two goals down to rescue a point against Bournemouth, but this was not a convincing performance from Matthias Jaissle’s side.
Newcastle were abject for the first half an hour and the visitors could have been out of sight. It was disjointed and lacklustre as Bournemouth dominated before the break and regularly threatened Lukasz Hornicek in goal.
Even during the fightback, Newcastle lacked cohesion and penetration, but forced their way back into it through hard work, spirit and determination. Whether you believe Harvey Barnes’ wonder goal and Jacob Ramsey’s late strike paper over the cracks or reveal a togetherness – a grit and determination that bodes well for the future – depends on the individual.
For the second weekend in a row, Newcastle had just two shots on target and scored two goals. At the other end of the pitch, they have allowed their opponents 61 shots in just three games, the highest in the division. That is not going to be sustainable long term. Something Jaissle acknowledged.
“It shows where we have potential,” he said. “There are elements to improve offensively.
“The learning curve is there. There were some elements missing from our performance but there was a strong response. The lads showed big character, big personality and big commitment... It is always better to get a point and see the potential to improve.”
A reality check is not necessarily a bad thing. There has been a lot of hype and excitement on Tyneside and a self-congratulating tone to their own end of summer appraisals.
But this was a reminder of the team’s limitations and the fact that only three of their eight summer signings started the game, with two more coming off the bench, underlined they are a work in progress.
In truth, that is fine. It is the start of September and the Premier League campaign is only three games old. They have a new manager and a new-look team. There has been a significant amount of change in a very short period of time.
It was not the easiest summer, and despite the insistence from senior figures at the club that they had always remained calm and methodical during their summer reset, there was a whiff of crisis only a few weeks ago.
When Eddie Howe quit as manager and Bruno Guimarães, the captain, forced his move to Arsenal at the start of August, Newcastle looked in disarray. So, to have started the season unbeaten from three games against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth is encouraging.
It is also worth highlighting just how good the visitors were. In the first half Bournemouth were superb, rushing Newcastle, forcing mistakes and pouring forward in numbers. In Alex Scott, just as he was in their victory here last season, Bournemouth had the best player on the pitch.
That opens up another conversation. Newcastle played like this a lot at home in Howe’s final season in charge, especially in the second-half of the campaign, but tended to lose not draw the game.
On this occasion, they secured a decent point with a late equaliser thanks to substitute Ramsey, who looked good when he replaced the off-colour Lewis Miley.
Bournemouth will feel they should have held on. They had taken a deserved lead through Marcus Tavernier, who took advantage of a static and ball-watching Amar Dedi&cacute to bundle home from close range.
Marco Rose’s side should have scored again minutes later when Sven Botman gifted the ball to Evanilson on the edge of the Newcastle area, but he failed to hit the target.
Bournemouth had their tails up and when another blunder from Dedic – galloping forward and losing possession with a heavy touch – Nico González, another new signing, failed to make a tackle to stop the attack.
Justin Kluivert’s long-range strike thumped against the post and hit the back of goalkeeper Lukasz Hornicek. Scott reacted quickest and his cross spun into his own net off the leg of Malick Thiaw.
Newcastle were in disarray and were lucky to be back in the game before half time as Barnes whipped in a stunning strike 25 seconds after the restart.
Despite seeing more of the ball, other than a Joe Willock header that dropped wide of the post early in the second half, Newcastle did not create another clear goal-scoring opportunity until Ramsey’s equaliser.
That is a cause for concern, but Newcastle remain unbeaten. Nothing shapes perceptions more than results. Jaissle is right to cling to the positives from that.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the Newcastle boss said: “Mixed feelings. Happy for that spirit, that belief the lads were showing until the end together with the crowd. I felt the energy and felt if we had five or 10 minutes more we could win this game. But the first half was not expected. This is something we need to improve. This is part of the journey.
“We knew Bournemouth would come with everything, they always show great intensity and if you do not compete with that you get problems. We struggled with that in the first half but the lads showed the right reaction.”

Easily the worst half an hour of Matthias Jaissle’s short time in charge and as bad as anything we have seen from Newcastle in front of their own supporters for a while.

Bournemouth should be two in front. A terrible pass from Sven Botman gifted the Brazilian the ball on the edge of the Newcastle box but he failed to hit the target.
Newcastle are rattled. They have not got to grips with Bournemouth in midfield and they are crowding out Yoane Wissa and Joe Willock whenever Matthias Jaissle’s side look to go direct.

Marco Rose’s Bournemouth tenure has started in frustrating circumstances. They had been leading 1-0 against Manchester City in their first top-flight fixture this campaign, but conceded two late goals to dramatically lose 2-1. Bournemouth were also left kicking themselves last weekend against Everton, after a defensive mix-up between Ryan Christie and Marcus Tavernier following a corner delivery gifted James Tarkowski a 91st-minute equaliser, allowing the visitors to salvage a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.
At opposite ends of the country, over 350 miles separate these two sides. Away days in English football can’t really get any longer. The travelling Bournemouth support will hope their loyalty can be repaid with a first Premier League win of the season under Rose, while Newcastle will aim to continue their unbeaten start and carry on the positive momentum created by Jaissle.
