The venue capacity has been increased after the works

A theatre has increased its capacity following a £277,000 renovation.

All 855 seats at the Alban Arena were replaced during the works, which began in September 2025, and were funded by owner St Albans City and District Council and operator Everyone Active.

The new red velvet seating has increased the venue's capacity to 902, with more wheelchair spaces also added.

Jo Ditch, theatre contract manager for Everyone Active, said it was "fantastic" the project was complete.

The LED aisle lighting and increase in wheelchair spaces would make the auditorium more accessible for visitors, he added.

A further £50,000 has been used to improve the venue's toilets, which have new flooring, lighting and mirrors.

Visiting performers, which in the coming months include comedians Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr, will be able to make use of the refurbished green room which was part of this investment.

The Alban Arena opened in 1968 and hosts more than 250 shows each year, including music theatre and comedy.
