Theo James is opening up about the bloody conclusion to The Gentlemen Season 2 and how Eddie Horniman’s transformation will shape the show’s already confirmed third season.

When the Netflix series began, Eddie was a reluctant aristocrat attempting to free his family from the criminal empire operating beneath their estate. By the end of Season 2, he has embraced power and become far more calculating.

The finale completes that transformation after Eddie discovers that his older brother, Freddy, helped orchestrate the attack that killed Eddie’s new wife, Bella. Rather than killing Freddy, Eddie forces his brother to use a chainsaw to behead Gospel John, the crime lord who manipulated him.

James told The Hollywood Reporter that Eddie’s decision allows him to punish Freddy without completely severing his relationship with the family. It also demonstrates how comfortable Eddie has become with using violence to control the people around him.

The actor, who also serves as a co-executive producer, said Eddie is now positioned to become “more ruthless and deadly” as the story continues.

Season 3 will examine how much of Eddie’s former identity remains after he pursues power and revenge. James said the creative team wants to explore whether the character can retain any sense of morality or whether he has crossed the line into becoming a complete monster.

Eddie’s increasingly complicated alliance with Susie Glass will remain another major part of the story. Although the two share a strong connection, James suggested that their competing ambitions could ultimately force one to overpower the other.

Viewers should also expect the criminal world of The Gentlemen to expand beyond England and Italy. James teased that the next installment will visit additional countries and place its characters in what he called a “very different cinematic planet.”

Netflix officially renewed the Guy Ritchie-created series for a third season in August. A production date has not been announced yet.
